Okay, so I have my psych appointment tomorrow. I had him take me off the xanax. I feel like my OCD has gotten way out of hand, so I know I need to be prescribed to another anti-anxiety med. I have taken Ativan and Klonopin also before. I don’t want to be on any of these! What are some other anti anxiety meds? Does Valium work well?
I am already on Luvox, an SSRI. It’s not helping much. He already increased my dose also. I’m on 150 mg. Do two SSRI’s work better together?

Chosen Answer:

Ativan, klonopin, xanax, and valium all belong to the same group of drugs called benzodiazepines. Valium has a very long half-life…it can take ~200 hours to leave your system, but peaks at 2 hours. Basically, it will knock you on your ass. Probably not what you want.

Are you on an antidepressant? I’m a pharmacist with limited psych experience….I believe the benzos are to be used as you transition to using an antidepressant (SSRI preferred – can take 8 weeks to see improvement) which is the mainstay for OCD.

My uncle (who is 50 something) mixes his antidepressant medication with klonopins, cocaine, weed, alcohol and lortabs all in the same day. Common sense tells you that’s dangerous but what facts can I tell him about the effects mixing these drugs can have on his health?

Chosen Answer:

I will try to give you a load of information you can dump on him. Hopefully it can help.

First and foremost 3 of the drugs you mentioned are depressants.(Klonopin, Alcohol, lortab) When you mix those together they all have compounding effects. The two that are the worst are the klonopin and alcohol. They will cause significant CNS depression, which can lead to coma and death by stopping respiration and pulmonary circulation.

Next the cocaine and klonopin are a very deadly combinations. I cannot tell you how many hospital patients die from this combination. It causes your arrhythmia in your heart, which means it has irregular beating patterns. This can lead to cardiac arrest. It is really hard to treat because you need support within about 5 minutes for cardiac arrest before brain death begins.

An important thing to mention is that the alcohol and klonopin can cause deadly withdraw upon discontinuation. This can include seizures and delirium in the worst cases.

He is far to old to be doing that to his body. His body will not handle that for long. It is honestly a ticking time bomb. I really wish you the best of luck.

Throughout an individual’s court-mandated period of Probation/ARD (Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition) timeframe, what are the regulations, with specific regard to prescribed medications?

For example:
A person is sentenced to 2 years of Probation in Delaware County or Montgomery County in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, he/she has been battling acute anxiety, ADHD, and pervasive ongoing chronic pain.

Along with his/her monthly epidural injections for the pain, and his/her weekly sessions of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for the psychiatric issues, his/her doctors have also been prescribing certain medications for his/her conditions.

However, a number of these medications are controlled substances (i.e., Schedule III – Schedule II), e.g., Xanax, Klonopin, Adderall; Roxicodone, OxyContin, Soma, etc.

So, my fundamental question is this:

If he/she were to enroll into one of these programs, what are the basic regulations and/or guidelines, regarding the ‘controlled’ medications? He/she is 23 years old, currently attends a prestigious university in PA, and has been battling these conditions for approximately 13 years. Abuse/misuse is completely out of the question, and he/she does not consume alcohol or any types of ‘hard drugs’. Ultimately, he/she requires these forms of treatment in order to ‘feel normal’, and go about his/her daily life.

I would greatly appreciate any type of information from any Probation Officers, lawyers, professionals, and/or any other individuals who have found themselves in types of similar situations.

Thank you for taking the time to read my question!

Recently, I have been taken off of Wellbutrin and Klonopin because I no longer have medical insurance. I had to quit cold turkey about 3 weeks ago. Ever since then, I have been having horrible migraines and neck pain. They seem to be getting worst and medicine is failing to respond. I have been sleeping all day and it is causing me to miss a lot of classes. I talked to my professor about a week ago and explained this to him and he was pretty understanding. He wanted me to get a note from my counselor that verifies that I have been on medication but she is unable to write one for me. I don’t know what to do, I don’t want to fail, please help

I’ve had migraines off and on for years as a result of stress. I started taking over the counter migraine tablets. I didn’t expect much. WOW. They were GREAT !!

I’ve tried Excedrin Migraine, Anacin Migraine and a generic version. ALL amazing. Yay !!

Dosage is 1. That’s all it takes to knock a monster headache.

I have Gad and a panic disorder and I hate taking medicine my doctor prescribed me some paxil and I started taking it and it gave me a zaping feeling in my head so I stopped taking it. Its been about a month since I took it and Im thinking about tryin it again. So is it normal to feel like that? Will it go away? Please if anyone was takin it tell me how you felt and how it benifit you.

Chosen Answer:

With me i was heartbroken and within 3 weeks on it i could at least go to work.
It does do that “head-shock”thing in some people-it helped me through a bereavement, i got those electric shock like sensations in my head from time to time (1/40 days perhaps).
It took a while to decide to come off it, but i felt a LOT better for doing so after i was no longer down.

One of the hardest things about being on an ssri is knowing when you no longer need it.
I could have lost my job or worse had i not have taken it, so it’s hard to say what might have been.
I work in health care and I know this drug has a bad press.
All i can say is if you are getting adverse side effects , it may be not for you and maybe see your doctor for a newer ssri.
Paxil(paroxetine-seroxat) is quite old now, there are newer/different ssri’s to choose from.

I have to take a drug test for a job at Target, but I occasionally take Klonopin for insomnia – will they look for something like this during their drug testing ?

Chosen Answer:

I don’t know what they look for specifically, but if they find a drug in your system that they don’t allow, but it is taken as a prescription medication, then you should be able to provide proof of your prescription and be okay. They just want to make sure that you aren’t all jacked up on something you shouldn’t be taking. As long as you can prove that you are on a medication prescribed by a doctor, then it shouldn’t be a problem at all.
And if you do have questions like this, just ask the manager about it. Mention the fact that you take medication, and he will be able to relieve all worries.

Chosen Answer:

I hope that your civilian doctor was referred through official channels, since you are taking such wonderful meds. If he is a specialist referred by the military medical system, he can suggest it to the military. It’s a military board that will make the decision.

Recent studies have linked long term marijuana use to decreased amygdala volume. Decreased amygdala volume (size) is associated with panic disorders. Ever since I was in the 7th grade I have smoked marijuana regularly, and by the time 11th grade rolled around, I had my first panic attack. I stopped smoking, but the panic attacks remained, it’s like this underlying panic no matter what I do. What I want to know is this: is there any sure way of increasing the size of your amygdala? BTW: it’s not only the panic that’s bothering me, ever since my exsessive marijuana usage I have also experienced a loss of emotional depth, which has resulted in an overall “dulling” of my personality. Thanks all.
